Star Clippers Cruises

Star Clippers Cruises : The real sailing vessels!

Your Cruise line
Star Clippers operates three of the world’s largest and tallest sailing vessels!

Visiting ports often untouched by larger cruise ships and offering passengers the activities, amenities and atmosphere of a private yacht, Star Clippers is recognized as one of the premier specialty cruise lines. It’s a romantic ambiance in a comfortable and modern setting. Come on board Star Clipper, Star Flyer, or Royal Clipper

to get the feeling of the sailors of the old days where adventure begins.

Your itinerary
The world you’ve discovered with Star Clippers is unlike the one you’ll find on a cruise ship. It’s as if you had your own chartered yacht and could sail anywhere you wanted. Star Clippers ships sail to private places, protected anchorages of magnificent small islands.

The ships currently sail throughout the Caribbean, Mediterranean, the Baltic, Costa Rica, and Panama Canal. More in details, the Star Clipper’s Caribbean itineraries begin in St. Maarten or Barbados. From St Maarten, her Treasure Islands voyage sails northward to the Leeward and the British Virgin Islands. Her Leeward Islands voyage ventures southward to Guadeloupe and Dominica, sampling the best of the Leeward Islands. The flagship, Royal Clipper, sails from Barbados on alternating voyages to the Grenadines and the Windward Islands. The Caribbean venues where Star Clipper and Royal Clipper sail are famous for the glorious sailing weather, and every voyage promises the thrill of passage making under full sail.

Your Cabin
Like a fine resort, all the amenities are here,  and you’ll find the accoutrements of a luxurious classic yacht, where everything is ingeniously designed for comfort, ease and efficiency:

Double bed or twin beds that can be converted to queen, marble bathroom, private safe, television with in-cabin video, DVD player, direct-dial telephone, hairdryer and comfortable furnishings. The decor is tastefully traditional. Burnished brass fittings and mahogany bright work recall our nautical heritage. Soft natural fabrics reflect the colours of the sun, sea and sky. Prints of famous clipper ships and sailing yachts grace the walls. Everything is immaculately maintained and your steward knows exactly when to appear or disappear. On Royal Clipper, 14 deluxe suites offer the ultimate in cruising comfort, with private veranda, whirlpool tub and 24-hour room service. All but six of her 98 cabins are outside, and for the ultimate indulgence, two 355 square foot owner’s suites may be combined to accommodate up to eight guests.

On all three ships, you are free to dine when and with whomever you wish – including officers, who join the guests in the dining room most nights.

When you rise, help yourself to a continental breakfast with croissants, toasted English muffins or sweet Danish pastries. Or savour a full breakfast with fresh tropical fruits and crisp bacon, grilled sausage, smoked salmon and omelettes cooked to order in the dining room. At lunch, a marvellous buffet of seafood, salads and grilled favourites awaits your pleasure. If the day includes a stop at one of the paradisiacal islands we frequent, you might also be treated to a festive outdoor barbecue on shore. When evening comes, our elegantly appointed dining room featuring a splendid collection of paintings of sailing ships becomes the setting for the chef’s finest culinary presentations, designed to please the eye and the palate. All complemented by equally fine wines. You’ll find our service to be friendly and gracious, befitting a sophisticated restaurant. Of course, Star Clippers would not presume to dictate your seating preferences. The dress code? No need for formal gowns and black tie, casual elegance is the order of the day and each night.

Clearly this is not a cruise ship in the ordinary sense. On Star Clippers, you will find that there are no rigid schedules. You are free to do as you wish with your days.

To entertain passengers, Star Clippers bring local performers on board to give you an authentic taste of the local music and arts. You’ll enjoy the conviviality of fellow shipmates while a live band plays tropical tunes from a real paradise. The Captain and crew are superb improvisers of the kind of light-hearted fun you’ll only find on Star Clippers. The Captain’s daily briefing on deck is wonderfully informative, and a chance to hear some great story-telling as well. And there are other events and activities during the day and night that have evolved from Star Clippers’ sailing heritage. In fact, all Star Clippers passengers say that they enjoy Star Clippers ‘ easy-going informality and it makes the cruise so special.

Friends gather round the Piano Bar and join in singing a few favourites. And in the Tropical Bar, the bartender shakes a pitcher full of some delicious cooling concoction. Now, is there anything more relaxing than this?

All Star Clippers ships feature open-seating dining in an elegantly appointed dining room, our convivial indoor-outdoor Tropical Bar and Piano Bar, and an Edwardian style library where a Belle Époque fireplace glows with warmth that reflects the friendliness and enthusiasm of Star Clippers’ hospitable officers and crew.

Star Clipper and Star Flyer are both 360 feet long and each carries just 170 guests in pampered comfort. Life aboard is blissfully relaxed, much like traveling on a private yacht. You’ll never feel confined on Star Clipper or Star Flyer. Each ship offer spacious accommodations and expansive teak decks with ample space.
For connoisseurs of sail cruising, the 439 foot Royal Clipper offers the ultimate sea-going experience, balancing the grandeur, adventure and tradition of sailing with the superb service, amenities and accommodations of the finest modern yacht. Royal Clipper carries just 227 guests in luxurious style. A full 19,000 square feet of open deck and three swimming pools create a wonderfully spacious and expansive outdoor environment.

General information

Cruises in the Caribbean

A Caribbean cruise is one of the best ways to discover this region for the first time. Each of the Caribbean Islands is different and according to your taste, you may prefer the one with the wonderful white sand beaches and dry vegetation like Antigua or the other one that has luxuriant and tropical vegetation like

St Lucia. These Caribbean Islands are very diverse and we distinguish them by their size, their geology (volcanic or limestone origin) and their inhabitants (mixed of English, Dutch, Spaniards, French with the native population).
A cruise is the perfect occasion to discover several Islands at one time in order to come back later on to visit deeply the one you prefer. You will choose a cruise according to several criteria such as the proposed activities, the food, and the quality of service, the casual or elegant clothing at diners, your cabin and the price. Finally, cruises are no longer reserved for the rich Americans that are in retirement. On the contrary, with the entire possibilities offer with the different size of ships, their origin (American. English, German, and Italian) as well as the choice in itineraries, and duration, anyone can now take a cruise, but they have to chose it carefully and according to their needs.

Route, duration, season

There are three major routes for the Caribbean cruises: Western, Eastern, and Southern. All these routes depart from the ports of call of Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Port Carnaveral, and Tampa in Florida, San Juan in Puerto Rico and sometimes New Orleans. The Western Caribbean cruise stop at some or these islands: Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Cuba, and Cozumel (Mexico). The Eastern Caribbean route sails through the British and American Virgin Islands, St Martin, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Dominica, and Martinique. Finally, the Southern Caribbean cruises enjoy the beauty of the Islands of Barbados, St Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Grenadines and the ABC Dutch Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao).  Caribbean cruises can last from 3-4 days (Bahamas cruise only) up to 14 days, the most popular ones being the 1 week cruise and to enjoy it at its best, the perfect length is about 10 days. The high season for Caribbean cruises is from Mid-February to Mid-April but some cruise liners start the season en November to finish it in June. Finally, the individual cruises on small sail ships are available all year long according to the local weather.

Caribbean Cruises: Big cruise liners and luxury ships

Cruise liners or Mega ships

The first mega ships started their journey in the 80’s. They are like small cities and can carry between 1550 to 3000 passengers. With their big size, they can offer more common space, and some has enough space to include a golf field or several pools. They are more affordable and offer easily

some special fares at the beginning and the end of the high season. These big ships also have a better stability and those suffering from sea sickness will almost or not feel at all the rocking of the cruise liner. Moreover, it may take all your cruise length to discover all the ship’s corners and find your cabin easily; you may walk more than necessary at the beginning. However, these ships are so big that they cannot get close the some pretty harbour. In high season, many big cruise ships call the same ports, and you may find 3 to 4 ships at the same place for one day. The island will suddenly get overburden with close to 5000 tourists doing about the same excursions and that may create some traffic jump. The other disadvantage with the immense size is the delay in disembarking the ship. You cannot be in few minutes visiting an Island if 2000 people want to do the same as you. However, you are on vacations and not in a rush, you have therefore to integrate this coolness in your thinking as the Caribbean locals do it all their life long.
There is a classification of the cruise liners, from 3 to 6 stars (or 2 to 5, depending on the guides). The ships are in fact of popular class, moderate, premium or deluxe. Some ships, like Princess Cruises, RCCL, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line) or Norwegian Cruise line (NCL) have ships in 3 and 4 stars. 2 stars are very seldom, Easy Cruise would be an example. Among the cruise ships companies offering the Caribbean destination, here are some we suggest:

****** Crystal and Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The Crystal Serenity and the Crystal Symphony are both super deluxe ships of approximately 1000 passengers each. One crew for about two guests is the ratio on these boats so you can be sure to get the attention you need at all times. Regent Seven Seas Cruises (RSSC) offers the Navigator, Mariner and the Voyager on its Caribbean Cruises. They are smaller ships, between 490 and 700 passengers and again there is a little more than one crew pour a couple. Here again, the staff will be responding to all your needs.

*****  Silversea Cruises
With the Wind, the Shadow, and seldom the Cloud, Silversea carry between 296 and 382 passengers and offer as well a ratio of almost one crew per passenger, proof of its luxury service.

*****  Seabourn Cruise Line
The Seabourn Pride and Legend are the two ships cruising the Caribbean. They are identical and carry 208 passengers.

***** SeaDream Yacht Club
2 Luxury ships, SeaDream I and II, sail from November through April the Caribbean from San Juan, Saint Thomas, Antigua and sometimes Miami  for scheduled 7-night itineraries and only for 55 pampered couple.

***/**** P & O Cruises
There are 6 ships with the venue of the Ventura in spring 2008. All the ships are quite big, between 1250 passengers capacity for the Artemis, the only ship especially reserved for adults, and 3574 passengers for the new Ventura, more family oriented. This English cruise line mainly sells to Great Britain.

**** Celebrity
Some of the ships of the celebrity fleet are the Celebrity, the century and the galaxy are less than 1900 passengers; they are issue from the old generation (in service in 1995 and 1997). The 3 other ones, The Constellation, the Millennium and the Summit are all part of the Millennium era and started in the years 2000 and up; they all have a capacity of more than 2000 passengers. The Azamara, recently finished will cruise the Caribbean in 2009 with only 694 passengers.

**** Costa
On the twelve Costa’s ships, only the Fortuna and the Mediterranea are located in the Caribbean. They have between 999 and 1300 cabins and offer excellent offers if you can book well in advance.

**** MSC
Only the Poesia is cruising the Caribbean in 2009-10. It has 1275 cabins for total passengers of more than 3000. Again, prices are very competitive if the reservations are made few months ahead of time.

***/**** Princess Cruises
Princess has 17 ships in total. For the Caribbean route, the ships used have different capacity; The See and the Dawn carry 1950 passengers, The Golden and the Grand carry 2600 passengers and the Caribbean, the Crown and the emerald carry approximately 3100 passengers.

*** RCCL
Royal Caribbean Cruise Line offer many itineraries in the Caribbean with the Independence of the Seas (3634 passengers. Other ships have also some Caribbean itineraries like the Jewel if the Seas and the Serenade of the Seas (2501 passengers each), as well as the Voyager of the Seas (3114 passengers). RCCL is dedicated towards family vacations.

***/**** Norwegian
The Jewel, Pearl, Dawn, and Sun have different itineraries leaving from Florida. Other ships like the Majesty and Spirit will leave from Texas or Louisiana for other Caribbean routes. All these vessels are big with lots of passengers and also offer family staterooms up to deluxe suite.

Finally, other cruise lines like Holland America Line, Cunard, or Carnival cruise Line (young and family oriented) and others also offer Caribbean cruises. Please do not hesitate to contact us for the best offer corresponding to your needs.

Caribbean Cruises: Sailing Ship, mix

These ships are between the individual sailing boat and cruise liners. They have sails but also cruise with motors, so they can easily respect their schedule as they are not totally dependant on the winds, sometimes capricious in the Caribbean. Their sizes are adapted for smaller ports of call in quieter bay and sometimes they

will propose specific itineraries, outside the normal route of big ships. They welcome approximately 110 to 312 passengers, allowing more seclusion. They are almost all 5 stars deluxe boats but the atmosphere is relaxed as it is always on a sailboat. The experience in these ships is a very enriching one and one of the best way to discover small paradise Islands of the Caribbean. Among the most popular sailing ships you find the Star Clipper, the Compagnie du Ponant, and the Windstar Cruises.

Destination: British Virgin Islands / Saint Barts / US Virgin Islands / Barbados / St Lucia / Cayman Islands / Puerto Rico

Sailing boat: Monohulls, Catamarans, Yachts

This cruise type is dedicated for the more adventurous persons or the ones who followed Alinghi challenge and would like to understand this wonderful passion of the skippers. The Caribbean region has two specific areas favourable to sailing cruises. Up North, the British Virgin Islands are considered the capital of

sailing. Due to the short distance between the Islands, you can easily do 1 to 2 hours of sailing and already encounter a new island to explore. Every day, you discover something new and are always surrounded by land. This is best way to cruise on small ship for the first time as it’s quiet, and you won’t get bored, the scenery always changing in front of your eyes and you can also cruise this small area on board a motorized yacht.

The other area is located south of the Caribbean in another décor, the Grenadines. Its capital, St Vincent is the place where the majority of the small sailing cruises start their journey. The distance between the islands are longer, therefore there is more navigation involved but it is also the opportunity to get you completely surrounded by the immensity of the Caribbean Sea with its fabulous colours. You, your ship, and the sea, what a memorable moment! The Grenadines islands are also one of the last places in earth where nature is at its best and still protected; Tobago Cays is the perfect example to illustrate this.

For the sailing cruise, you can rent a monohull or catamaran with captain and hostess or, if you are skipper yourself, just rent the ship (bareboat). With the first option, you can rent them per cabin or the whole ship. It is advisable to do it with people you know (small group) or family due to the promiscuity. The sail boats have between 2 to 4 cabins (sometime more) and you rent them per week or occasionally per day. You also have to be aware of the water and electricity that is not unlimited on a ship. In the British Virgin Islands, we work with Vacances sous voiles (French crew) and North South Yacht Vacations and in the Grenadines with Barefoot Yacht Charters who also offers sailing courses. DSL Yachting is only rented to experienced skippers and sail from St Lucia.
